Personal Concierge for a Day

Do you remember a TV show called Queen for a Day? Guests would tell their sob stories and then audience members would vote for the winner. The lucky lady was crowned queen and usually chose an appliance for a prize.

Wouldn’t it be grand if you won a contest and the prize was a Personal Concierge for a day? What would this mean, exactly? A personal concierge can do just about anything, from walking your dog to arranging a party to helping you organize your house. But what’s the difference between a personal concierge and a personal assistant?

A personal assistant usually works for a single individual or company and may draw a salary, while a personal concierge is an independent contractor who has a number of clients and who charges an hourly rate. She may have taken a certification course for training and can be a member of a professional organization, such as the National Concierge Association.

This is what my new sleuth, Keri Armstrong, does for a living in Murder Pays a Call. Keri owns a personal concierge agency in affluent Sunny Grove, Florida. With her two other employees, she does a range of tasks from planning corporate breakfasts to anniversary parties, from helping the elderly manage their bills to shopping for busy mothers to arranging for pet sitters.

We’d all like to have help with certain tasks, especially ones we dislike or just don’t have the time to do. Me? I need someone who could sell the collectible items in my house and help me get rid of the other things I don’t need. This is such an onerous task that I completely avoid it by working on my books. What’s a job that you’d like to hand off to someone else?

Suppose you were gifted a personal concierge for a day. What would you have her do?
