12 Talking Points for Social Occasions

Writers tend to be introverts. We’re used to being home alone with our characters and computers. When we venture out into a crowd where social interaction is required, we might be at a loss for words. This isn’t the case at a writer’s conference. There we have lots in common with other participants and the topics to discuss are endless. But with strangers, we may have to rattle our brains to think of something smart to say. Here are some conversational gambits you could try to get the dialogue flowing. Avoiding politics and religion are wise guidelines to follow.

Have you been anywhere new and different recently?

Do you have any upcoming trips planned?

Have you seen any good TV shows or movies lately?

Do you like to read? What kind of books?

Have you cooked anything new lately?

Do you have family in the area?

What are your favorite restaurants?

Do you have any plans for [fill in upcoming holiday]?

What do you do for a living? [or] Do you still work, or are you retired?

What do you like to do for fun?

Do you have a creative hobby?

Has anything surprising happened to you lately?

As writers, it’s tempting for us to stand on the sidelines and observe people, but that’s really avoidance behavior. We need to put ourselves out there and get involved. Remember this adage: “I am a writer. Anything you say or do may be used in a book.” Consider your conversations as research. You never know what may spark an idea.
