Having been to both San Juan and St. Thomas before, this time on RCCL’s Adventure of the Seas we roamed the streets ourselves. In San Juan, my friend Ann Meier and I walked along Calle de la Fortaleza to the Barrachina Restaurant, alleged birthplace of the Pina Colada. Here we ordered the famed drink along with lunch in the historic colonial building. I had the Grouper Fingers, while I believe Ann had the Mofongo.
Then we headed back down the sloping street, stopping in shops along the way, before heading back to the ship. If you prefer to take a shore excursion, I recommend going to El Yunque Rainforest. It’s a long drive but worth it for the memorable experience. This is where I had to buy a poncho quick as it was raining when I went there! There are other tours as well, including an enjoyable foodie tour in the city.
In St. Thomas, from Crown Bay, we took a taxi into town for $6.00 each and went shopping before heading to Gladys’ Cafe for lunch. Service was incredibly slow at this popular venue, so much so that I would hesitate to make a return visit. I did enjoy my grouper sandwich. I’ve also eaten before at Café Amici down one of the alleys and at The Greenhouse Restaurant on the waterfront. Here I am with Ann and my cousins, Janice and David Sklar.
St. Thomas remains one of my favorite ports with much to do. Besides many island shore excursions, beautiful beaches, pirate lore and shopping, there’s a good foodie tour here as well.
