📚 Story Description
When salon owner Marla Vail agrees to speak at the local history museum’s gala opening for a new exhibit, she expects applause—not a catastrophe. But shortly after she takes the stage, a thief steals the featured diamond-studded hairbrush, leaving behind an empty display case and a badly injured security guard.
Marla’s friend, museum curator Becky Forest, begs for her help in recovering the prized heirloom before the mayor uses this scandal as an excuse to cut their funding. To make matters worse, the antique hairbrush comes with a curse, and suddenly bad luck is spreading through town faster than a botched dye job. As Hanukkah festivities begin, Marla would rather be lighting candles than chasing clues, but with Becky’s job at stake, she takes on the case.
Her trail leads to a knot of suspects including the hairbrush’s owner, his greedy cousin, shifty museum staff, and a reclusive collector of mystical antiquities. Instead of enjoying menorah lights and latkes, Marla discovers murder, lies, and larceny. She’ll need sharp wits and a holiday miracle to save the museum and to keep the truth from being brushed aside.

🎁Excerpt
“Becky has asked for our help in recovering the hairbrush. She’s afraid of losing her job over this disaster, and I can’t let her down.”
“I get it. You’re her friend, and it’s in your nature to help people.”
She poked him. “And yours, too. Don’t forget we work as a team, and if we fail, we’ll risk our reputation. People rely on us to learn the truth.”
Dalton’s lips quirked. “All right, you’ve convinced me. We can ask some questions, as long as we don’t interfere with Gaston’s investigation.”
“What’s your theory about the thief?” she asked as they proceeded to their car. “Could it be someone who’d heard about the exhibit and decided to steal it for the stones? Joel would have headed over there when the speeches started, presumably to stand next to Becky. If the gift shop lady abandoned her post for any reason, the thief could have slipped inside the museum at that time.”
“Yes, but that would have left too much to chance,” Dalton remarked. Having reached their car, he held the door open for her. “Remember, the glass case was intact. That means either the thief picked the lock, or worse, had access to a key.”
“So, you’re implying it was either an inside job or a professional thief who’s skilled at picking locks?”
“Or a staff member who colluded with a guest to steal the brush.”
