Publishing Choices

You’ve finished your manuscript. Now it’s time to either submit it to a publisher or put the book into production prior to indie publishing your work. Which way to go?

Delays Will Happen

As I’ve just finished a new series starter, I’ve debated whether to submit it to a traditional publisher or go the indie publishing route. But first, a diversion.

In case you were wondering why I haven’t posted in so long, other than promo posts, the revisions on this story took me a long time. A lot of this was due to family issues—first my husband’s illness and passing, and then the birth of my granddaughter. From sadness to joy, this journey sapped my mental energy along with the myriad tasks of settling an estate. Editorial revisions and then beta reader corrections kept me focused on finishing the book. I’m happy to say this work is done.

Choosing a Traditional Publisher

So back to the decision on what to do with the work. Submitting to a traditional publisher and getting accepted provides several advantages. You don’t have to spend any money up front to produce the book. The publisher covers those costs and will even pay you an advance. They may offer a contract for two or three books, giving you employment for the foreseeable future.

A trad publisher can get reviews at major sites such as Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus. They might get the book into bookstores or libraries. Most of all, though, is the prestige that comes with having a publisher recognize your talent. You can speak on panels at conferences that favor traditionally published works. Bookstores might be more willing to host a signing. And people you know might show you more respect, especially when you say deadlines are looming and you have to work.

The Other Side of the Coin

However, not all is cookies and cream with a traditional publisher. It could be a year or more before your novel is published. You have no control over pricing. You’re expected to promote your work by having a vibrant social media presence, attending conferences, and booking speaking engagements to put yourself out there.

Deciding to Indie Publish

Those factors above made the decision easy for me. It’s been over a year since I’ve had a new release (box set number six) and much longer since my last full-length novel. Getting a new book in the hands of my readers as fast as possible is my priority. That eliminates the choice of a traditional publisher right away.

Then there’s the issue of pricing. I like to keep my books affordable for readers, and that won’t happen unless I publish them myself. As for reviews, I don’t think readers care so much about the major sites as they do about consumer comments. This is why you, dear readers, are always begged to review our books. And lastly, regarding travel, I’m not as young as I used to be nor do I have my husband anymore to escort me to book events. So I prefer to stay closer to home and only attend local functions.

What Else to Consider 

“But what about the book contracts and advance money?” you ask. Well, here’s the thing. With everything else going on in my life, I don’t want to work with deadlines anymore. I need to set my own pace and not deal with the stress of meeting a deadline or even having to write another full-length novel. I get to decide what to do and when. Yet they say to be successful as an indie author, you must produce several books a year. If you can do it, fine. If you’re not so inclined, that’s okay too. It’s your choice.

As for those advances, they’re trickled out at different stages in the publishing process. Plus, you’ll only get paid twice a year, or in the case of my last publisher, only once a year. As an indie publisher, however, you get paid EVERY MONTH! And you get to keep all the money, aside from the cut taken by the distributors. No agent fees. No money set aside for reserves against returns. No inscrutable royalty statements. You’re your own boss and will sink or swim on your own merits. Or on the foibles of the marketplace.

One Last Caveat

If you are a new author starting out, I would suggest you attempt to get a traditional publisher first, if you mean to make this a professional career. It will help you build your readership, and you’ll learn a lot from the editing process. Later down the road, you can decide to indie publish your work once you are established. Or not. Many authors have started out self-publishing their work and been successful, but you do have to work hard at branding and produce books often enough to get your series out there. Either way, be sure you work with a professional editor.

How to Create a Box Set

Setting out to create a book box set can be a daunting task. Join the online writing community and gather data on this topic as soon as you think you might go in this direction. Lots of great advice is out there and it will help you with these steps to create your own book bundle.

How to create a box set

Series Title

You’ll need to invent a series title for your box set that is different from your actual series. It helps to include the words “box set, boxed set, collection, or omnibus” to show that it’s a bundle. Avoid the word “anthology” because this has come to mean a collection of works by different authors. You’re doing a same-author set. I went with The Bad Hair Day Mysteries Box Set for my new series.

Then you must give each individual book a title. For me, this became Volume One, Volume Two, etc. The subtitle is Books 1-3 and so on. Go to Amazon, put in the search window any of the terms above along with your genre, and study the titles. For example, put “cozy mystery box sets” and see what pops up. Note how those authors handle the series title and subtitle. 

Manuscript Preparation

For each book, strip out the front and back matter. Decide if you will keep the individual title pages or will insert a book cover photo instead.

Format each book the same, i.e. single space, one-inch margins, chapter header styles, indent first line, etc.

Compile the set. At the end of book one, copy and paste book two. Repeat for book three if this is a triple bundle.

Front Material

Add a title page to the front of each boxed set.

Create a blurb page with a story blurb for each individual book title. Here’s where you can mention any awards a book has earned. I include a review quote for each book as well.

Obtain an ISBN number and assign it to your box set title at MyIdentifiers.com. [See my previous post for instructions.] Add this to the copyright page for your box set. Put the copyright info for the box set volume at the top, followed by the original copyrights for each individual title. I put the credits here also for my cover design artist and my professional formatter. 

Back Material

Include one Author’s Note with a Call to Action (i.e. Request for Review, Newsletter Signup) at the end of the box set.

Add an “About the Author” page with your bio and social media links.

If you wish, present a Book List at the end with all your titles in series order. Don’t forget a buy link. I send readers to the books page on my website so as not to run into conflict with distributor policies. For example, you can’t have an Amazon link on a book you upload to Apple.

Cover Considerations

Hire a cover designer to create an overall theme that carries through from volume to volume. This may include a new logo for your box set series. (Credit to Kim Killion at The Killion Group, Inc. for my designs). Consider placement and fonts for series title/logo, subtitle, and author name for consistency. Choose a color scheme (i.e. bold colors, tropical hues, pastels). Decide on a background image. Note all mine take place in the salon with small variations. Marla, my hairstylist sleuth, is on each cover holding a drink or item related to one of the stories.

Order both 2D and 3D covers for each set. The book distributors will have different policies in this regard. I use 2D covers at Apple and Kobo, and 3D covers at Amazon and BN. Having both types is also helpful when marketing your work.

Get Ready to Publish

Format for your distributor(s) of choice. I send the assembled manuscript to my formatter, who makes sure any errant coding is removed, checks chapter headers for consistency, inserts book covers in place of individual title pages, and converts the set into my choice of ePub format. You can also upload to Draft2Digital for free conversion.

Marketing Tips

Decide on a release strategy. How many volumes will you be releasing? How soon together do you want to launch them?

Create a short blurb for each set to use as part of your book descriptions. Examples:

Meet Marla Shore, a Florida hairstylist and salon owner with a knack for styling hair and solving crimes. In this trio of cozy mysteries, Marla stays at a haunted hotel, has a blast at a beauty trade show, and sails on a Caribbean cruise with a killer onboard.

Create several memes at BookBrush.com for the first volume in your series.

Once you have the cover and blurbs, begin a page on your website for volume one and save as a draft.

Upload to the distributors and collect your buy links. Add these links to your web page.

Write blogs in advance for pre-order and for launch date.

Prepare a newsletter to announce the new book.

Write a page of tweets and FB posts that you can use with your memes.

Plan a Launch Party and decide upon giveaways.

Determine if you will seek reviews for this volume or let them populate at will.

Think about ads to attract new readers to your series via your box sets.

Consider applying for a BookBub deal for volume one after volume two launches.

Self-Publishing Made Simple – Part 4

Buying and Assigning ISBNs for your Indie Published Books

Legalities

You’ve prepared your manuscript as per Part 2 and Part 3 below. Now decide if you’ll want to publish your work under your own imprint. If so, create a publisher name and do an online search to see if the domain is taken. If it is available, reserve the domain name.

Register with your State as a “Fictitious Name” or a “Doing Business As” company. You can do this online. Or establish an LLC. Check with your accountant to see which one is right for you. It looks more professional for your book to be published by “XYZ” Press than by the author.

Apply for a county or city business license/tax receipt as required. Note: if you’re 65, you may be exempt from fees but you still have to apply. Check your local regulations.

Open a business bank account. Consider if you’ll be selling your own books and will need to collect sales tax. Otherwise as sole proprietor, you don’t need an EIN number. Use your own SS number as an individual proprietor. Again, check with your accountant or attorney for what’s best for you.

Buying ISBNs

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. Why own your ISBNs?

  • Control over metadata
  • More professional – Your imprint is the publisher
  • More availability to retailers, booksellers, and librarians
  • You need an ISBN to get a barcode, which may or may not include pricing information.
  • You need one ISBN number per format. So for an ebook and a paperback edition, you’d need two ISBNs. For a hardcover, you’d need another one. You do not need an ISBN to publish an audiobook through ACX. You may need one for audiobook distribution elsewhere.
  • Certain book distributors will require you to have your own ISBN.

Where can you buy them?

Sign in to http://www.Bowker.com  It costs $295 for 10 ISBN numbers. You DO NOT need to buy a barcode or a QR code. You can get these free online by searching for free barcode generators or free QR codes. Otherwise, distributors such as Ingram and KDP Amazon supply their own barcodes. Sign up for emails from Bowker.com so you can be notified of sales.

How to Assign Title Data to Your ISBN(s):

  1. Sign into https://www.myidentifiers.com/ with your username and password
  2. Go to the My Account dropdown menu on the right side of the navigation bar at the top of the page.
  3. Click Manage ISBNs.
  4. Click Assign Title next to the ISBN number you wish to assign.
  5. Complete all fields marked with red asterisks. Be sure you have ready your book’s description, format, price, and author biography.

Title Details

Book title, subtitle, main description, original publication date, language, copyright year, optional Library of Congress Control Number, cover image. 

Contributors

Your author name goes here along with your bio. 

Format and Size

Medium, i.e. Ebook, Digital, Print, or Audio
Format, i.e. Electronic Book Text
Primary Subject, i.e. Fiction, Mystery and Detective, General
Secondary Subject, i.e. Fiction General
Editions and Volumes; Title Volume Number – number of book in a series; Total Volume Number – number of products in a multi-volume work (i.e. box set)
Previous Edition ISBN or New Edition ISBN 

Sales and Pricing

Where is the title sold? United States
Publisher and Imprint. Here is where you put your LLC or fictitious publisher name.
Title Status: Active Record
Publication Date: Fill this in; you can change it later if necessary
Target Audience, i.e. Trade
Price: Currency (US Dollars), Price (3.99) Type (Retail Price)
Series Title Info (name of series) and Series Volume Number 

Hit the SUBMIT button.

You can change or add any of this material, except the ISBN number assignments, at a later date.

If you have another format for the same title, you can click “Clone” next to the first one, select the next ISBN number, and change the data accordingly for the new title.

Keep your ISBNs handy. You’ll need to add them to your copyright page before formatting and to fill them in when you upload your book to the various distributors.
